Our final look at National Vegetarian Week is all about desserts. Now, we can already guess what you’re about to say about vegetarian desserts, aren’t they just desserts? Well, effectively yes. There are few if any at all which contain animal meats.

Of course though, what you want to look out for are ingredients which are vegetarian friendly. Some cheese and chocolate products contain animal by-products. The tip here is to then to look out for vegetarian friendly markings on the packets and where possible avoiding some dairy ingredients altogether.

One of the best ways to do the above then is to go for more vegan orientated dessert dishes.

There has been a lot of development over the years, as well as the right new forms of ingredients to make vegan desserts easier to make and taste better as well.

Naturally though, there is so much you could be doing in this department you don’t need to big an explanation.

Who doesn’t love chocolate? Well, it’s a favourite here in the office and we know of many clients that love baking with this ingredient. When we have had our NEFF chef in for demonstrations, there is a certain crowd pleaser that is an 10 minute chocolate cake in the combination microwave oven, the best thing, it only takes 5 minutes to prepare the mixture.

But what other recipes are vegetarian and vegan friendly? Jamie Oliver’s decadent vegan chocolate cake is certainly a top 5 favourite. Another Jamie favourite is this chocolate mousse, believe it or not, it’s also vegan! Finally, if you’re looking to cut the gluten away from the diet, then this flourless chocolate cake is for you.

You’d think that baking a vegan, dairy and gluten free victoria sponge would be impossible, well it isn’t and the best thing is, we’ve tried it and no one could tell the difference. This recipe from Jamie is just what the classic cake lover asked for! A fan of lemon drizzle cake? Well this variation with polenta is ideal for those looking to make their variety that little bit lighter.

Ok, so our Tiramisú is neither vegan or gluten free, nor is it alcohol free either but in vegetarian week it’s necessary to say, you need something good for the soul, and like many great vegetarian dishes, this is perfect. Our guide to the perfect Tiramisú is available here.

Let’s remember that National Vegetarian Week falls in the midst of summer and as a nation we are great at producing some wonderful, fresh and bright fruits. If you haven’t guessed, we’re talking about Eton Mess. It’s the season to be working with these great ingredients and creating a fab version.
